Honoring Traditions at Park Place Topping Out

MW Builders and partners celebrated the topping out of their office project at Leawood’s Park Place. The final steel beam was placed on a snowy morning with onlookers from future office occupants, Tortoise, as well as building owners, VanTrust Real Estate.

As part of the ceremony, a tree was placed on top of the final beam. This tradition originates back to a Scandinavian religious rite in which builders placed a tree atop a new structure to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced by its construction. While the tradition still remains today, it now largely signifies the structure has reached its maximum height and is cause for celebration among those involved in the building process. The topping element also generally includes the American flag and often, the flag of the future building’s occupants or owner.

In a demonstration of holiday spirit, the final beam in the Park Place office building was placed with a festive tree, complete with garland and ornaments, an American flag, and a Tortoise flag.

The 3-story, 50,000-SF building is expected to be completed in the fall of 2019.
