Palmer Events Center

This City of Austin project is located in downtown Austin and consisted of the construction of an events center building to be used for exhibits and conventions. It also included an adjacent parking garage — a 460,000-SF, 4-level structure — constructed entirely of precast concrete with poured-in-place topping slabs.

This innovative project won the AIA Connecticut Design Award in 2003. The extensive layout and coordination of the multiple facets of construction on this project, as well as the self-performed work in many areas, resulted in MW Builders delivering an on-time, high quality project to the City of Austin. The Events Center Building has 160,000 SF of interior space, part of which is an exhibit hall with 70,000 SF of open space. There are a variety of unique architectural features, including:

  • 90,000 SF of tongue-and-groove glued-laminated wood decking from Canada
  • Aerated precast concrete panels from Mexico
  • Birch plywood wall paneling from Finland
  • Local stonework from the Texas hill country

The exterior façade of the building consists of white limestone masonry, aluminum/glass curtain wall, aluminum composite panels, aerated precast concrete panels, decorative aluminum railings, and exposed/sandblasted concrete columns with precast caps.
